Game on! Tentology created the new venue for Vancouver Fashion Week literally in the days before the gala launch of the Spring/Summer 2015 event. It was a make it or break moment for owner Jamal Abdourahman and a risk that paid off. Walking up to the giant tented structure made my heart flutter. Visually stunning and so familiar. Must be all the hours invested in Project Runway that makes the tent very ‘MB Fashion Week‘ exciting. That and following Vancouverite’s Dominique Hanke and Joshua D Langston‘s adventures last week in New York.
To describe the gala night accurately, you would need to imagine hundreds of people, starved then let loose at an all-you-can-eat buffet for 120 minutes. Overwhelmed by the cameras, the outfits, the scents and sounds and all the familiar and not so familiar faces can be intimidating. You find yourself swept along the scrum, pushing up close to people wondering ‘do I stop, chat and pose with this person’ or move on in hopes of getting a coveted shot with style icons Sue and Liam Randhawa, fashion writer/editor/inspiration Marilyn Wilson, infamous fashion bloggers Felix Tavira and Style Squared by Z&M, or to cozy up to the kinder gentler bloggers such as Randa Salloum and Jessica Luxe? It is a whirlwind and it all depends on what exactly you are looking to get out of your Vancouver Fashion Week adventure. Exposure. Inspiration. Celebrity. Whatever!
The gala was co-hosted by Mary Zilba of Real Housewives of Vancouver fame and MC Anthony Lewis of MuseCloset.com. Further into the show, Patti DeSante discussed the new social issues fashion project – Raising the Hemline – launching with Green Embassy founder Zuhal Kuvan-Mills. The rest of the evening was filled with a snippet from each designer showing this week. There are 70 designers showing throughout the week and 40+ were chosen to have an outfit from their collections to walk. It was bang, bang, bang, and more bang with models gliding by in outfit after outfit, so much so that Jason and I got lost in the myriad of colours and textures. We tried to keep up instagram’ing with the 14 designers spotlighted in MetroLivingZine over the past two weeks, but could not! Plus, in our defense, a majority of the designers were showing new collections that we had not seen yet.
VFW Designer Spotlights!
Our fourteen day pre-VFW spotlights were chosen based criteria that fits Vancouver‘s image as one of the greenest cities in the world. Designers that tout and prove themselves as eco-friendly, waste conscious, that recycle and reduce fabrics and/or create all their pieces by hand thus reducing factory produced waste are being acknowledged by MLZ for going that extra step and thinking about the bigger picture. Consequently we will be moving forward with focus on thirteen of our original designers. Regretfully local designer Evan Clayton has added new fur to his latest collection and that is a ‘fabric’ that cannot be defined as eco-friendly.
What to Wear?
When the choices are unlimited it makes it almost impossible to decide what to wear to the gala! The gala is really a fashion show for attendees to show off and show off they did.
Kitsilano Kittys Closet menswear intern Jason Pillay and I, worked TheCloset from front to back in the weeks before the gala only to find my outfit did not fit on gala night. A highly unanticipated outcome of the sweets buffet at the KKC sponsored Green Embassy Artist Tea and Talk with Zuhal Kuvan-Mills days before. Luckily I had a selection of amazing hats from Granville Island Hat Shop to build a new outfit around. This awesome bright green hat with speckled feathers is designed by Lilliput Hats and a stunner! Paired with a deep purple Elie Tahari wool dress and Kenneth Cole pointy multi-colour stilettos, this hat garnered attention and even an interview with a delightful reporter from CNTVna.com. Jason paired a gorgeous shiny black silk with beaded fringed collar and cuffs Escada blazer with skinny bronze metallic jeans and a waterfall of costume chains. What a pair we made!

We look forward to a week of grueling hours, flashbulbs, drink line-ups, designer chat-ups, VIP lounging, and of course, FASHION FASHION FASHION!
