Day #3 of Vancouver Fashion Week presented a wardrobe challenge. The two designers of the evening that I was anticipating – Marita Mamuchashviili and Green Embassy – both present garments that are visually stimulating tactile treats and are know for pushing texture to its limits. As I tend to favour a classic silhouette in black, my closet is devoid of chunky sweaters and bold statement pieces so I decided to tip the scales to the opposite end of the spectrum and go completely devoid of texture.

I have been reading up on the origins of Comme des Garcons line and other Japaneses designers and wanted to try a combination that gave me a long structured but asymmetrical shape.

From Kitsilano Kitty’s Closest I pulled a vintage outfit consisting of 1980s Giorgio Armani long sleeved hip length jacket with off-centered buttons and a knee-length black Max Mara draped skirt.  A simple pair of leggings and a pair of Lola Ramona polka dot bowed pumps with a concept hat from my sponsor Granville Island Hat Shop completed the look for Day #3.

This photograph was snapped behind the scenes by Dominic Manea. I recently met Dominic via a friend. He is an event photographer now living in Vancouver. Ten years ago, he came to Canada with his parents from Galati, Romania to find a new life. Primarily a nightclub and charity event photographer, he recently discovered a passion for shooting fashion. I checked out his website portfolio and found his candid shots were outstanding and engaged his talent for a few evenings to hustle photographs of the models and attendees. I really enjoyed working with him and this shot is one of my favourites from the whole week.

Using embroidered ancient symbols against a palette of nature-based blues and greens offset by neutrals, the Spring/Summer collection was soft and luscious. The structured jackets appeared powerful yet comfortable and the unisex sweater compilations require no cover-ups or accessories to complete them.

Designer Marita Mamuchashviili was pleased with the audiences reaction to her collection. “I have a feeling that my collection was liked by the audience very much. Many of them described my collection as extraordinary, mystical, interesting, beautiful, high quality, comfortable and wearable.”

Many of us had thought that the desirability of graphic/geometric prints would be waning by 2015 but collections by showing designers such as Marita, Lu Liu and luxury designers such as Peter Pilotto and Ralph Lauren are forecasting many more years of intricate beauty.
